A SET of speed limits to make rural roads safer will be imposed in Walton village.
Campaigners from the parish council won through with their plan on Friday.
The speed of traffic passing through the village has concerned residents for years.
They helped persuade Warrington Borough Council's traffic committee to vote unanimously in favour of the plan.
A 30mph limit will be set in the village itself, and a 40mph buffer limit will be imposed on roads leading into it - at a cost of around £10,000.
One objector spoke out against the limits - Robert Hardie of Whitefield Road in Stockton Heath.
He argued the cost to the taxpayer was unnecessary because the roads are self-limiting.
And he branded the parish council a 'local pressure group', saying: "It think it's inappropriate for a local pressure group to impose limits on all the roads users for its own personal comfort."
Quality
But Vic Lacey, the parish council chairman and a resident of Walnut Tree Farm, Chester Road, said: "The introduction of speed limits would not only improve the quality of life for residents but would make the roads safer for all."
And Sharon Harris, a resident of Rowswood Cottage, Warrington Road, added: "I live on the crossroads and people frequently knock at my door asking me to be a witness to accidents."
The Warrington Cycle Campaign also threw its weight behind the plan, and the meeting heard the police appear to be in favour.
