M6 toll road back on track

A TOLLED expressway to the Thelwall Viaduct could be back on the cards - to the dismay of countryside campaigners.

The M6 expressway would run parallel to the existing motorway, from junction 11 to junction 19 or 20.

A public inquiry last year found significant opposition to the 50-mile expressway, but the Government has announced another feasibility study.

A study into travel between the midlands and Manchester in 2002 called MidMan, recommended expanding the existing motorway to four lines.

Phil Johnson, head of service for transportation, said: "We recognise that very shortly, there will be a capacity problem on the M6 in the local area.

"While we would wish to see the Government adopt the improvements of the MidMan study, which included support for public transport, we will wait to see what the precise commitment is."
