Play your part in carnival's rebirth

FUN-LOVING residents are being urged to join the Nantwich Annual Family Fun Day Association as preparations for the first carnival since 1971 gather pace.

The newly formed association is looking for proactive members of the community to sign up and play their part in the rebirth of the summer extravaganza.

The fun day, which will be held at Barony Park on July 9, has been christened Nantwich 05 Family Fun Day, and will include both traditional and modern forms of family entertainment.

At the group's inaugural meeting last week, the formal constitution was signed and a new bank account was set up.

Keith Cafferty, newly appointed chairman, said: "We are now progressing with our plans at a reasonable pace.

"The first job is to set up the infrastructure and entertainments, and we're still at that stage.

"The day is really an update of the old carnival, which was tremendous.

"It used to be one of the best in Cheshire, and if we can achieve anything like that we'll be very happy."

Among the events due for inclusion in Nantwich 05 are a fairground, dance troops, pony rides, dog agility demonstrations, archery and welly throwing.

Mr Cafferty is searching for clubs, pubs and societies to take part in a tug-of-war competition, and is hoping to organise a 'Nantwich Through The Ages' pageant involving the schools.

The association will also be inviting a police representative to its next meeting to discuss holding a street parade.

Mr Cafferty said: "We really hope that everyone in the town will play their part in this.

"We are anxious not to leave anyone out, because it's about encouraging community spirit.

"By setting up the bank account, we are showing our commitment to this event in the long-term.

"Although Nantwich Town Council has set aside £15,000 in its budget, we are hoping it will eventually become self-sufficient through sponsorship."

The association is looking for new members and anyone wanting details can call Lynne Mulrooney on 01270 619224.
