Site chosen to protect rare hares

RISLEY has been chosen as one of just seven sites across the country to secure the future of the brown hare.

The Risley Landfill Site, owned by Biffa Waste Services, has been identified as housing a number of hares.

While the animals were familiar faces across the British Isles from Roman times until the 1960s, they are now so rare that they have been classified as a vulnerable species.

The project, funded by Biffa, will develop an extensive recording system, looking at ways to improve the grassland habitat, raise awareness of the hare and conservation practices and look at how to maximise the hare population.
