Wood will be living memorial to Julia

CHILDREN from Broomfields Junior School gave a helping hand to a businessman who has created a new woodland in memory of his wife.

The youngsters helped plant trees to create a new wood on land off Dodds Lane, in Appleton, which has been funded by David Ashall.

Mr Ashall decided to create Julia's Wood in memory of his wife who died recently.

She used the land to graze her horse many years ago and Mr Ashall says the creation of the wood will be the best way to remember his wife.

"Julia's Wood, as it will be known, will create a living memorial to Julia as well as a tranquil place for local people to visit and wildlife to flourish," he said.

Staff from the Woodland Trust were on hand to help the youngsters plant the saplings.

The new woods will link with the existing land owned by the trust and part of the Lumb Brook valley complex - much of which is designated as ancient woodland.

Jo Burris, of the Woodland Trust, said: "We are very grateful to Mr Ashall for his donation of land and funds to maintain the site in the future. It is the perfect way to remember a loved one. It is fitting that the new woodland was planted by local children, who will be able to come back and enjoy the site with their children in years to come."
