Pensioner tackles fire in microwave

NEWTON fire brigade is warning residents to be aware of the procedures needed to tackle minor blazes in the home, after an elderly man prevented an electrical fire.

The resident of Wood Court sheltered accommodation dealt with a minor microwave blaze and managed to minimise damage before the fire crews arrived.

The incident happened when the pensioner misread cooking instruction settings, cooking his meal for 20 minutes instead of one minute.

The 66-year-old put a damp cloth over the microwave, and closed the kitchen door to prevent the fire spreading.
