Fairbrothers estate wants a community centre

COMMUNITY spirit is hoping to create the foundation stones of a new residents centre in Newton.

Plans for a state-of-the-art community centre for people living on the Fairbrothers estate were revealed to the Newton and Golborne Guardian last week, boosting the town's regeneration.

The proposal comes as the estate, off Borron Road, was named as one of 38 deprived areas across Merseyside needing improvement of public facilities.

Peter Newnham, project officer, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for the people living on the estate.

"The area has been sited as a pathway area and we are hoping to secure a grant from the European Regeneration Fund, and begin work in March."

Unlike other venues in the town, the proposed centre will be community-owned and run, giving residents total input into the project.

And there are plans to offer a range of services, including family learning classes to improve educational benefits.

A fundraising team is currently looking at gaining funding from the National Lottery, Coalfield Regeneration Trust and Biffa Waste in order for work to get under way in March.
