FIREFIGHTERS urged people to fit smoke alarms after a family of five was rescued from a house fire.
The Latchford family, from Brook Avenue, were asleep in the early hours of Monday when thick smoke billowing from an ignited television triggered the smoke alarms.
They escaped just minutes before the television exploded. It left glass embedded into the floor, only a metre away from Jamie Hutchinson's bed.
The 20-year-old had lit an oil burner to rid his bedroom of a foul smell, which seeps into the
house from outside.
His mum, Sandra Murphy, aged 42, said: "It's a really nasty smell like bad eggs that seeps in from the sewers.
Jamie was taken to Warrington Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation but was later discharged. His mum, step dad and younger brother and sister all escaped unhurt.
John Delay, sub officer at Warrington Fire Station, said: "We would ask people not to leave candles on top of combustible items like televisions - and especially plastic or wooden materials."
