CHESHIRE Police is currently searching for new recruits for its dog section.
The force is asking the public to donate German Shepherds or similar breeds for training at its training centre in Reaseheath.
There are currently 29 dogs working with officers in Cheshire, but Sgt Sue Whyatt said that another five would be needed for a full strength team.
She said: "We currently have 29 dogs with officers, but ideally we should have 20 German Shepherds and 14 springer spaniels, so we're a couple short.
"If someone would like to have their dog assessed, they are welcome to call us."
Police spokesman Jane Gregory said: "We are particularly looking for German Shepherd dogs with a good temperament aged between nine months and two years.
"Dogs form an integral part of Cheshire's police teams and provide a vital resource in the fight against crime.
"If you have a dog that may fit the bill, we'd like to hear from you."
