Tannery to close and move to Europe

WESTY based tannery Eagle Ottawa closes its doors in May with around 56 potential job losses.

Bosses at the Thelwall Lane factory have confirmed that part of the site's operations have been moved to mainland Europe.

The finishing operations will be moved to Hungary while the research and development facility will relocate to Germany.

A spokesman said the Hungary move was in response to a competitive market while the move to Germany was to get closer to the European customer base.

One Westy resident, who did not want to be named, said that many people in the neighbourhood would be glad to see the back of the factory, as the work there causes foul chemical smells across the area.

She added: "I am sorry about the people who have been made unemployed but I am sure that they will be healthier working in another environment because it gets up your nose. Imagine what it does to the people work there? It's disgusting."
