Students set to Samba for competition

CHILDREN from Sir Thomas Boteler High School in Latchford are preparing to compete in a national youth music competition next month.

Twenty students from years seven to 10 have formed a Samba band that plays with traditional Brazilian instruments, many of which are imported.

The children play a variety of drums to create a lively, exciting sound similar to that heard at the famous Rio Carnival.

The group has been together for a year and is run by percussion and world music specialist Phil Clarke, who visits the school twice a week.

It is the first time that the group have incorporated dance into their performance, and the children are also looking forward to sporting new uniforms when they are judged at Barrow Hall theatre at Great Sankey High School on Saturday, March 5.
