Why build a road that makes congestion worse?

REFERRING to your headline article of January 27 in which Councillor Moran is quoted as saying "The Speed Limit Review Panel was applying to increase the speed from 30mph to 40mph, which I think is absolutely ridiculous".

No, Cllr Moran. What is ridiculous is the concept of building a through route intended to ease congestion, then making it slower to negotiate than the road it replaces.

While the speed limit is the same as Welsh Row, the new route includes an extra set of traffic lights timed to give disproportionate favour to the housing estate at this junction.

The councillor's natural reaction, no doubt, will be to further impede progress on Welsh Row, thus making Kingsley Fields the lesser of two evils, but voters should think hard as to whether this is progress.

At least this explains, if we needed it, why local election turnout is so poor.

But in Cllr Moran's defence he must of course be affected by his time at the County Council where they see fit to continue to build traffic light controlled roundabouts that have never worked in the history of the motor car, and fail to provide decent road markings, a simple measure that would help motorists and reduce frustration.

Is anyone interested in setting up a "Stop the Barmy Councillors" party?
