Civic hall future is undecided

THE future of Winsford Civic Hall is no clearer after borough council officials requested more information before making a recommendation.

It was reported exclusively in last week's Guardian that one of the options being considered by Vale Royal Borough Council was to close the existing civic hall in favour of a new facility at Winsford Sports Complex.

But at a meeting on Tuesday evening members of the Executive Group asked the social review committee to reconsider the various options available to them.

Chris Bottomley, head of leisure services at Vale Royal Borough Council, said: "They wanted a bit more information.

"It will now be reconsidered and a recommendation will go before the Executive Group again once that has happened."

The possibility that the civic hall may be relocated to Winsford Sports Complex is a result of a report commissioned by the borough council looking at ways to improve leisure facilities in the town.

The report revealed leisure facilities in the Winsford were not up to standard and the borough council is now considering a number of options.

If the civic hall is moved to Winsford Sports Complex it would provide both the new venue as well as the swimming pool.

The civic hall has been strongly involved in the community since it was opened in 1967 but Mr Bottomley believes any decision will be for the good of the town.

He said: "This is a very exciting time and whatever is done I have no doubt that it will improve leisure facilities in the town."

The social review committee will discuss the future of the civic hall again on March 17.
