Sports cash for schools

A HUGE cash handout has been given to two Runcorn primary schools.

More than £70,000 has been given to St Edwards and Westfield Primary so they can develop their sports facilities.

The Big Lottery fund announced the news this week.

St Edwards will get £21,311 to install outdoor adventure equipment, providing kwik cricket targets and permanent basketball goals and additional sports markings.

The Old Town school has 123 pupils but the facilities will be used by kids from other schools and by community groups.

Head teacher Mrs Lawrence said: "The money is very welcome indeed, we are glad to receive it.

"We will be able to offer these facilities not just to our pupils, but to other schools and community groups."

Westfield Primary, in Higher Runcorn, will get £55,570 to improve the playground and allow the pitches to be used throughout the year.

Again, Westfield pupils won't be the only ones benefiting - 560 pupils from other primary schools and 1,080 people from community groups will visit annually.
