Council set to back speed cameras

COUNTY councillors are expected today, Thursday, to agree to continue their support for the Cheshire Road Safety Camera Partnership for a third year.

The aim of the scheme is to improve road safety and reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in road collisions by using safer driving practices through the use of road safety educational and camera enforcement measures.

The partnership has published encouraging performance results in its first 12 months of operation at the 42 sites where speed cameras were in operation.

There was an average reduction of three miles an hour in speeds; personal injury collisions were reduced by 33 per cent and fatal accidents or serious collisions were reduced by 55 per cent.

Councillors are expected to also agree to a budget of £1.9 million and the introduction of a further five Cheshire sites into the partnership at their meeting of the special environment committee today.
