The shape of things to come

February 28, 2005: Legh Street car park will be reduced to 850 spaces

April 2006: Golden Square car park opens with 900 spaces and the remaining Legh Street car park is demolished

March 2007: Car park opens with 1,700 spaces

Key dates for completion:

Phases one and two (February 2005 to July 2005)

l Demolition of the northern section of Legh Street car park and Victoria House. 850 car parking spaces will continue to be available

l Golborne Street will be partially closed (except buses) as work on the new bus station begins. The existing bus station will be in use until the temporary bus station is available

Phase 3 (July 2005 to January 2006)

l Golborne Street will be closed and new malls will be built.

l The new bus station will be operating temporarily on the site where the new bus station will be.

Phase 4 (January to April 2006)

l Work continues southwards

l Pedestrian routes from Legh Street car park to Golden Square and the town centre will be redirected via Sankey Street. Legh Street car park remains open with 850 spaces

Phase 5 (April 2006 to March 2007)

l New bus interchange opens and is fully operational.

l The remaining part of Legh Street car park will be demolished and part of the new car park will be opened. Retailers begin to fit out their stores.
