HALTON Council's Consumer Protection Service is warning council house tenants to be on their guard if they are contacted by companies offering to assist them with the 'Right to Buy' process.
The Consumer Protection Service has learnt that some companies offering a complete Right to Buy service are charging between £2000 and £3000 for their services.
These companies are obtaining application forms for tenants, helping them complete the documents and handle all legal aspects of the sale.
Tenants considering buying their council house are being urged to think carefully before agreeing to pay over the odds fees to such companies.
A spokesperson for Consumer Protection warns: "These forms are available free of charge from Halton Council and you can get help filling them out from the Council's Right to Buy officer, Citizens Advice Bureau or Age Concern - none of which charge for this service.
"Local solicitors charge in the region of £400 to £600 for legal fees and will often assist with the application forms too."
If you think you have been misled by a Right to Buy company, contact the Consumer Protection Service for advice on 0151-471 7515.
