£550 cash for cards

REDUCING waste is a way of life for staff at Europe's only aluminium recycling plant, based in Warrington, so this Christmas they decided to take recycling a step further and raise funds for a children's hospice.

Novelis' generous 140 members of staff plus its contractors, raised £556 for Hope House by donating money rather than sending Christmas cards.

A spokesman for Novelis, formerly Alcan, said: "We chose to support the hospice because Christmas is a time for thinking about children. As a recycling company we wanted to do our bit to reduce waste and not sending Christmas cards was a small contribution toward s this."

Every year Hope House needs to raise three million pounds.

A spokesman said: "This was a very generous donation and every penny really does make a difference to us."
