Road calmed by speed cushions

NEW measures to cut speed are to be installed in Hassall Road, Alsager, to replace a system of controversial chicanes.

Residents have expressed concern about the chicanes, which were created through the addition of so-called "buildouts."

People living in Hassall Road said the road layout created could have contributed to two road accidents.

The buildouts are due to be removed and replaced with a series of speed cushions across the road.

Hassall Road does not meet criteria for the installation of a speed camera, and traffic calming is seen as the best way to reduce traffic speed to 30 miles an hour from its current average of 39 mph.

A series of road humps are scheduled to be installed in Moorhouse Avenue, Alsager, between its junctions with Lawton Road and Grove Court.

The humps are aimed at cutting average speeds from 36 miles an hour to 30 mph.

Highway chiefs say vehicle speeds on both roads are considered excessive, and both schemes are due to be installed by the beginning of April.
