CAT catches truants in impact day

TRUANTS, illegal parkers and off-licences were targeted in a Community Impact Day across Congleton.

The crackdown was led by Congleton Police Community Action Team, and resulted in 17 truants being traced.

Two off-licences were reported for allegedly selling alcohol to under-age children, and 20 motorists were given parking tickets.

A notice was served on a pub in relation to a number of "housekeeping issues", and two arrests were made in relation to the non-payment of fines.

Patrols of hot spot areas for anti-social behaviour, including the park, were due to take place, but they were deserted because of the dreadful weather.

Last Wednesday's Impact Day was organised and led by the police, working with education welfare, environmental health and trading standards officers, community wardens and traffic wardens.

"It was an exceptionally good day because of the successes we achieved," said Sgt Gareth Woods.

"The aim was to highlight what the police and other agencies can achieve when we work together.

"Hopefully the residents of Congleton appreciate how much hard work is going into addressing the persistent problems."

Seven pubs and four off-licences were visited over the day, and environmental health officers and police visited licensed premises and food outlets.

Community wardens stopped seven taxis to carry out licensing checks, and visits were made to problem Dane Housing tenants.

The Impact Day was the third to be staged in towns across the borough, and is to be followed by a fourth next month in Alsager.
