Crucial Jackson five!

Southport 10

Warrington 14

IN a game they could easily have lost, Warrington came up with two excellent tries to ensure that Southport remain anchored to the foot of the Rugby Football Union Euromanx South Lancashire/Cheshire Division One table.

Warrington, who lie outside the relegation zone, took an early lead when winger Morris brushed off the attentions of three defenders to create the space for full back Shaw to show his exceptional pace and glide over. James made no mistake with the conversion.

That was to be Warrington's last major move of the first half as the doughty Southport pack, aided by some strange refereeing decisions, inspired the home side to take a three-point lead.

The impetus swung back round to Warrington when the home side had a man dismissed for stamping.

The numerical disadvantage took its toll on the Southport defence and Warrington scored the best try of the match when good work from the forwards sent James Shaw in the clear. He shipped the ball on to the improving Robinson and the young centre drew the opposition and sent veteran winger Jackson racing over for five points. James converted to confirm Warrington's win.

WARRINGTON'S third team returned to winning ways in grand style when they completely demolished the South African exiles side at Walton Lea Road.

An eight-try victory showed the strength of the Warrington side, which saw welcome comeback appearances from Barnes, returning after paternity leave, and Richard Park, fresh from an educational sabbatical.

Warrington's try scorers were B Hayes, P Hayes, McDermott, Carter, Barnes, Ward and Hughes, two.

McDermott knocked over five goals.
