Backing for care proposal

WINSFORD residents have backed plans to reopen a disused care centre that will provide support for older people after a period of illness.

A public meeting was held on Saturday to discuss the future of the Elmhurst intermediate care centre on Roehurst Lane.

The proposals were given an enthusiastic reception and it is now hoped building work will begin soon after a contractor is chosen on February 7.

County councillor Tony Hooton was delighted with the response from Winsford residents.

He said: "This is an extremely important service within Winsford that will also help Leighton Hospital an awful lot.

"There is already a large measure of agreement that the building should be used for this purpose."

There were some concerns raised at the meeting over possible traffic problems if the centre did reopen.

Clr Hooton said: "It was good that people did raise their concerns over things like traffic but I'm sure we will be able to work around it and make sure it isn't a problem.

"This project is really marching on now and it is great news."

The Elmhurst care centre used to provide accommodation for more than 30 elderly people until it closed four years ago.

Central Cheshire Primary Care Trust is now working with Cheshire County Council and Mid Cheshire Hospitals Trust to finalise plans.

Clr Hooton said: "This project will ensure people can be discharged from hospital and still receive proper intermediate care before returning home."
