BIDDULPH children will benefit from improvements aimed at providing a safe route to school.
The Biddulph Valley Way is a former railway line, and a kilometre-long stretch runs between Newpool Road and Brown Lees Road.
The stretch is due to be surfaced to create a three-metre wide path for walkers and cyclists.
The path will also provide a route to school for children at Knypersley First School, Park Middle School and Biddulph High School.
The path is part of a £400,000 scheme being funded by Staffordshire County Council and Sustrans.
The scheme includes work to tackle decaying steelwork in the Brown Lees Road bridge. The bridge will be infilled from underneath, and widened to incorporate footpaths.
Infilling work has started, and the bridge is due to be closed to traffic for four weeks from February 21.
Pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge during this period, and motorists will need to use Tower Hill Road and Newpool Road to join Tunstall Road.
The scheme involves improving access to the valley way from the bridge, and the whole project is due to be completed by the end of March.
Town and district councillors David and Claire Stone campaigned for the repairs, along with Cnty Cllr Christina Jebb.
