Praise for recycling

HOUSEHOLDERS have been praised by environment chief Margaret Beckett for boosting recycling.

Warrington residents recycled 13 per cent of their waste between 2003/04, and this year hopes to see that figure rise to 17 per cent.

However, in other areas in the country, such as Trafford and Wirral, the recycling figure stood at less than 10 per cent.

Nevertheless, the country is set to have met its national target of 17 per cent.

Ms Beckett said: "This is positive news, and England looks certain to meet its national recycling and composting target, the first time such a target has ever been met.

"While there is still a lot of work to do to raise levels of recycling even higher, this is a strong indication that the nation is adjusting to more sustainable waste practices.

"This has been brought about through the commitment of the majority of local councils, a fantastic response from the public and carefully targeted Government support."

She added that poor performing councils with single figure recycling rates, would face action.

Warrington Borough Council's blue bin paper recycling scheme now reaches more than 80,000 homes in Warrington.

People can also take their rubbish to the town's recycling and household waste centres, as well as 'bring sites', where glass, paper, cans, plastics and shoes can be dropped off.
