Bridge pigeons had to find new home

PIGEONS roosting under the Runcorn Widnes bridge have had to find a new home after netting has been fitted underneath the arches.

Anxious resident Sue Molyneux and her neighbours were worried about the health hazard posed by the birds' droppings to a nearby children's playground.

"It was a constant concern," said Lib Dem Cllr Sue Blackmore, who helped to secure funding from the area forum to pay for the netting.

"We wanted to get it cleaned up for the kids who play there.

"We can now move forward and make it look nicer."

Chris Capes, of Neighbourhood Pride, said: "There has been a huge difference in the appearance under there. There is no longer an inch thick of pigeon muck and no more dead pigeon bodies."

Nets costing around £15,000 have been secured under four spans of the giant bridge.

A state of the art ball court and murals have also been developed as residents work the Neighbourhood Pride team to give the area a bright, new look.
