Police urge people to check up on cold callers

POLICE are warning residents to be on their guard against distraction burglars after an elderly woman was targeted in Sankey Bridges.

The incident happened last Thursday, at around 10am, when a man, posing as an employee from a Warrington recycling firm, knocked on a door at Pickmere Street.

An elderly woman answered the door and he asked her if he could have a warm drink.

The burglar was allowed into the house and while he was there he stole a quantity of cash.

The man was white, 6ft tall, slim, around 30 years old and had black hair that was neatly combed back.

He was wearing navy blue overalls and multi-coloured knitted woollen gloves.

A spokesman for Cheshire police said that residents should check a caller's identification carefully before letting them into their homes.

He also said people should call the company that the caller claims to be from or call the police if they think that something is wrong.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact DC Stephen Barnes, at Warrington CID, on 01244 613884. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
