Causeway works to be done overnight

MOTORISTS are being assured that works on one of Warrington's busiest roads will be taking place overnight.

A contraflow system is to be put in place on Wilderspool Causeway, from Brian Bevan Island to Bridgefoot roundabout, while the road is resurfaced.

But contractors will only be working between 8pm and 6am from Monday to Friday.

John Drake, Warrington Borough Council's capital team leader, said: "We appreciate that, although this is only a small stretch of road, it can be very busy at peak times and we have done our best to ensure that these proposals take that on board.

"We are looking to limit, as much as we possibly can, any impact caused by these works."

The project will also include bridgeworks between 8pm on Saturdays to 6am on Mondays, and phased footpath closures.

The work, which is expected to take around 12 weeks to complete, is being done to improve safety along the stretch of the A49.

Motorists are now hoping that there will be no knock-on effects to rush hour traffic heading along Wilderspool Causeway into the town centre. Jeremy Craddock, of Appleton, said: "Sometimes it used to take me up to 40 minutes to do three miles into work. That was with the normal traffic.

"What 12 weeks of road works will do to the traffic flow, God only knows!"

The borough council's executive board gave the thumbs up to the work at a meeting on Monday.
