Vics produce superb show against highfliers

BIDDULPH Vics pulled off one of the results of the season on Saturday against seventh-placed Barwell.

Only hours before the match their first team squad had been decimated by injury and illness.

A total of 10 players were unavailable, so the Vics' manager was forced to embark on a signing spree on Saturday morning.

Four new faces were drafted in, former Vics' manager Terry Stanway and Blue Mugge players Martin Heath, Martin Baker and Nicholas Hambleton.

The hastily put-together side scored a memorable 2-1 home win, the Vics going close in the opening minute, a shot from Heath skimming the post.

The Vics took the lead on five minutes, Ford passing inside for Marrow to crack home a superb shot into the roof of the net from a seemingly impossible angle.

The Vics continued to press forward, and only a strong Barwell defence prevented them from going further ahead.

The Vics scored their second goal on the half hour, Pestridge playing a ball through for Marrow.

His shot was blocked, but he regained possession, and his second shot was also blocked before debutant Heath pounced to score.

Marrow shot wide with 20 minutes to go, and Barwell gave themselves hope with a goal 10 minutes from time.

Pestridge was judged to have fouled a Barwell player in the box, and Turner scored from the resulting penalty.

The Vics' players claimed that the spot kick hit the angle of post and bar, but the referee said the ball had hit the frame inside the goal before coming back out.

The Vics are without a game tomorrow, and travel to Coalville Town next Tuesday.
