Brenda and Jean seek support for widows group

WIDOWS Jean Watson and Brenda Wright are hoping to set up a social group for women who have lost their husbands.

The friends live in Congleton, and were inspired to set up the group by the success of a widows group in neighbouring Alsager.

They need about 50 members to start the group, which would meet once a month and organise outings to the sea and the theatre.

"I have been to the Alsager group three times since I lost my husband 14 months ago," said Mrs Watson.

"We thought it was such a shame that there wasn't such a group in Congleton, and decided to try and set one up.

"The aim of the group would be to get people out of the house and give them another interest, as well as the chance to meet people.

"When you have lost your partner you need to go out, which I found was the only way to cope.

"We would need to hire a room once a month for several hours, and members would pay a subscription for the room hire and trips.

"We hope to organise outings to the sea and places of interests, as well as having speakers.

"Initially we want to see how many people are interested in joining the group, and would like some people to act as officers."

Mrs Watson's friend Marjorie Hassall is the treasurer of the Alsager Widows Group, and anyone interested in the Congleton group please ring 01260 276839 or 01260 274229.
