Making music for tsunami aid effort

MUSICIANS are uniting to raise funds for the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the tsunami.

Tomorrow evening's concert is being organised by Congleton Choral Society, and will feature a wealth of local talent.

The Rode Hall Silver Band joined the choral society for its Christmas concert, and makes a welcome return for the major fund-raising concert at Astbury Church.

Also performing will be Andrew Donaldson, the society's accompanist.

He is an accomplished musician in his own right, and will be playing the piano and organ.

Baritone James McVicar will be joining the choral society in movements from Requiem by Faure, Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar by Peter Cornelius, and the Nunc Dimittis by Dyson.

In addition Keith Hearnshaw will be playing a number of Organ Fireworks.

"When members of the society saw this catastrophe unfolding in front of them on television we decided we had to do something to help," said David Johnson, the society's musical director.

"Most of us are not doctors or builders, so we couldn't volunteer to go across and offer skills in those areas.

"However as musicians we thought we could organise a concert with like-minded people, which would raise valuable money for the disaster appeal.

"I hope as many people as possible will attend the concert, and we've priced tickets at £5 mimimum because many people have already given to the appeal."

The concert starts at 7.30pm, and tickets are available from Congleton Information Centre or by ringing 01260-276957.
