Coins to be given to pupils

GIFTS of commemorative coins will be made to children in Burtonwood and Westbrook to celebrate the parish's 400th birthday.

The parish council has decided to commission special coins for all children in its primary schools, to mark the years 1605 to 2005.

Clr Judith Guthrie said: "It's a really historic moment and children should be involved whether they are in Westbrook or Burtonwood."

From 1605 until the old airbase was transformed into Westbrook's housing estates, Burtonwood's religious and civic parish followed the same boundary.

However, the Rev Russ Naylor, vicar of St Michael's Church, with the agreement of Liverpool diocese, believed there would be too many people living in Westbrook to benefit from Burtonwood's village church. From then on, although the civic boundary remained the same, St Michael's only served people up to the motorway and new churches were built for Westbrook's residents.
