Comments are rubbish

CLAIMS that Winsford is turning into a 'black bin bag' town have been refuted by a Vale Royal borough councillor.

Clr Malcolm Gaskell has hit back at a report in last week's Guardian highlighting concerns from residents that rubbish was piling up in the town.

He said: "We don't collect side waste anymore and we will only collect what is in the bin.

"Most councils have never collected side waste and it is not a problem in those areas."

Clr Gaskill believes the comments in last week's paper were unjustified.

He said: "The waste collection scheme has been a success in most areas and there are just a few spots where there are problems.

"There was an incident last week where some kids were seen taking bin bags out of bins and throwing them around.

"If that kind of thing is happening then there isn't a lot the refuse collectors can do about it."

The comments come after Mike Kennedy, chairman of Grange Residents' Association, criticised the waste collection during the Christmas period.

Mr Kennedy said: "The council has to go back to a weekly collection or agree to collect side waste.

"We can't go on like this - there are mountains of black bin bags all over the town."

But Clr Gaskill believes the collection system is adequate.

He said: "If people use the system properly then there will be no problems."
