Support for appeal fund

TOWN councillors have pledged their support for the mayor's tsunami appeal by making various fundraising suggestions.

Mayor Don Beckett set up the fund following the Asian tsunami on Boxing Day and has set a target of £5,000.

The first fundraising events will be Woodford Brass band concerts at the civic hall on February 26 and March 1.

Clr Tony Hooton also made the suggestion of helping victims of the tsunami by sending fishing boats to the affected areas.

He said: "We are laying up perfectly good fishing boats in this country all the time.

"Fishing is extremely important to many communities in that part of the world so if we can send some fishing boats over there it would be of a long term benefit."

Councillors agreed to look into the possibility.
