Guide does her best to help the Mexicans

A HARTFORD Guide is determined to raise more than £1,500 so she can join others from across the globe to help people in Mexico.

Angela Higson, of Mornant Avenue, had to face a rigorous selection process before she was chosen to go on the trip, although the 17-year-old has yet to find out exactly what she will be doing there.

She said: "We'll be doing a community project but I don't know what yet. Last year, Guides went to Mexico to help local children who don't know basic hygiene.

"They taught them how to brush their teeth and wash their hands, but in a way that was fun."

Angela, who is a youth leader for the Rainbows in Whitegate, was inspired by last year's efforts to put herself forward for the trip and was chosen first to represent Cheshire and then the north west, before being picked as one of only a handful of Guides to go to Mexico.

Angela, a Sir John Deane's College student, said: "I was so excited when I was chosen but I couldn't believe it - the others were fantastic.

"I didn't expect to get anywhere but thought I'd go for it because it would be a good experience and good to meet new people."

The trip costs £1,650, which Angela needs to raise before she can go to Mexico in August, but she does have some ideas up her sleeve. She said: "I was told I was going in October and £1,650 is a lot of money to raise in less than a year - it's exciting but really scary.

"I'll have to write to different people for funds and I've got a few other fundraising ideas like a raffle and car wash, but nothing definite."
