Cadets strike for five-a-side glory

WINSFORD and Middlewich Sea Cadets have had a successful start to 2005 after they won a district five-a-side football competition.

The unit breezed to victory against other cadet teams from across Cheshire and will now compete in a national final in Portsmouth.

Lieut Terry Lloyd said: "We were delighted to win the competition and it just shows how talented they are in different sports.

"They are all big lads so that was an advantage and we won our matches 9-1, 5-1 and 6-1, so it was a superb effort.

"Hopefully we will progress even further and do well in the national final."

The victory is the latest in a string of successes for the unit, which last year came third in a national pulling competition.

Terry said: "We are just lucky that at the moment we have such a good crop of youngsters.

"They are all talented and work very hard so it doesn't surprise me that they are doing well.

"I have every hope that they can win the national competition and bring even more success to the unit. It is a five-a-side team but it is an achievement for every member."

Unit chairman Pam Booher said: "It is a wonderful achievement that needs to be recognised. Last year was a great year for us and it looks like 2005 is going to be even better."
