Hospitals need your help

HEALTH chiefs in Cheshire and Merseyside are urging people to avoid going to hospital unless it is totally necessary.

There has been an increase in accident and emergency admissions of about 9.9 per cent compared to last year.

Ann Marr, chairman of Cheshire and Merseyside emergency services planning team ESAT, said: "During the last week in particular, respiratory admissions have been much higher than the seasonal norm which, in tandem with rises in the number of flu-like illnesses, has resulted in high demand across the whole health system, from GP surgeries to hospitals."

If an illness or injury is not serious, the following alternatives are available:

l Self Care: Keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet and first aid kit at home.

l NHS Direct: If you are feeling ill or have hurt yourself and are unsure what to do, call 0845 4647 for a 24-hour confidential phone service staffed by nurses and health advisers.

l Pharmacies: High street pharmacists are highly trained experts who can give extensive advice.

l NHS Walk-in Centres: These are nurse-led centres, which offer access to treatment for minor illnesses and injuries.

l Minor Injury Units: These are led by highly qualified nurse practitioners who advise on and treat minor injuries like sprains and strains, fractures and bites.

l GPs: Your local GP surgery will have a range of staff who can offer general medical treatment and, if needed, referral for specialist care.
