Eat more fruit and veg to beat cancer

NOT smoking is the best way to reduce the chance of cancer a Warrington health chief says, as a new report reveals how people put themselves at risk.

Cancer Research UK said last week that half the 270,000 cases diagnosed in this country each year could be prevented. And many people were unaware that increasing their fruit and vegetable consumption, losing weight, stopping smoking and controlling their drinking would protect against the disease.

The national charity is launching a campaign to promote lifestyle changes that cut the odds of getting cancer. The four main cancer types are breast, prostate, bowel and lung.

Dr Marioth Manche, deputy director of public health in Warrington, said: "Not smoking and not inhaling other people's smoke is one area where people can improve their chances of not getting cancer."
