Firefighters join search and rescue teams in flood-hit Carlisle

A GROUP of Warrington firefighters have been in Carlisle helping with the rescue operation following the devastating floods.

Keith Roughley, Ian West, Mark Bushell, Phil Blakemore and Paul Jackson, of Warrington Fire Station, were part of the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service team that travelled to the city earlier this week.

A Cheshire Fire Service spokesman said: "Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service asked for the use of one of our safety boats.

"In response, we have sent a boat and members of our urban search and rescue team to assist with the rescue operations.

"This is an excellent example of mutual assistance and how we are committed to helping and supporting each other for the benefit of the communities."

Three people were killed in Carlisle as the gale force winds and torrential rain hit at the weekend.
