WEAVERHAM Wolves ARLFC juniors came face to face with Grappenhall Giants, the form side in their pool, and put up an excellent show despite losing 20-8.
Giants had won their previous eight games and were made to fight all the way by an ever-improving Wolves team.
And it was Weaverham who took the lead as Dom Kelly scored in typical fashion, with a run from deep inside his own half.
Matty Smith was then unfortunate not to score before Grappenhall levelled with a fine individual try.
Chelsea Furmston was leading the way with some crunching tackles, but Grappenahll scored again just before half time and turned around 10-4 up.
But Wolves were first out of the blocks in the second half and Jarrod Pickering was unlucky not to score as he lost the ball in the process of grounding.
Dom Jones then produced a sensational run, only to be stopped inches from the line in what would have been the try of the season.
Will Igoe began to put in some fine defensive work and this paid off when Kelly again scored another wonder try, this time from virtually his own line.
This really tested the talented visitors and when Kieran Taylor entered the fray they found it difficult to hold the powerful runner.
But the Giants were well organised in defence and when they had the ball in attack.
They killed the game off in the final few minutes with two late scores to give a harsh scoreline considering the effort Wolves put in.
Tom Beddard was named player of the match and Chris Sheppard was most improved while top tackler was Matty Smith.
