New idea to save bridge

A POSSIBLE solution to the closure of a popular Northwich pedestrian route -- which is sending about 200 walkers a week out of their way - has been put forward.

Former Vale Royal borough councillor Jack Loader says the county council could help to solve the situation at Riversdale swing bridge, which leads from the Hunt's Lock area into The Crescent and Sir John Deane's College.

He says the county council could transfer its attentions from creating a new bridge at nearby Marbury into revamping the existing structure.

Last week the Guardian reported how Northwich town councillor Tony Vickers is calling for the re-opening of the swing bridge - which is used by students of Sir John Deane's and County High School, Leftwich.

Clr Vickers said he was very concerned about the closure of the swing bridge by British Waterways North West.

He said: "It will affect people who walk and cycle up the side of the river. It is also an access on to the new Kingsmead development."

The town council is writing to British Waterways to bring Clr Vickers' concerns to their attention.

Mr Loader, from Hartford, said: "It seems short-sighted that they are building a bridge like that when they could change the situation at Riversdale instead.

"It is a case of wondering how much the new bridge would cost and how much it would cost if Riversdale was considered instead."

A county council spokesman said: "Cheshire County Council has a responsibility for Marbury Park but has no responsibility for Riversdale bridge, as it is not a public right of way.

"The Marbury bridge, which has already been constructed, was funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency and not the council."
