Appeal made for councillors to give their allowances to tsunami aid

CREWE and Nantwich council leader Peter Kent is appealing to his colleagues to donate a percentage of their allowances to the tsunami disaster fund.

He said: "This arrangement would set aside some contribution for the next 12 months and perhaps longer.

"The relief organisations are saying that they need some certainty of continuing support in terms of donations as well as the very welcome, massive, one-off bequests.

"I have therefore asked for members to donate a percentage of their allowances to the appeal on a regular monthly basis."

Borough Mayor Steven Roberts has also established a Tsunami Appeal bank account for the receipt of charitable contributions from a wide range of local sources.

He is currently working with several local organisations to organise a series of forthcoming fund-raising events including two concerts featuring local performers.
