Booze ban around leisure attractions

A BOOZE ban in and around Queens Park in Crewe has been given the green light.

A full meeting of the borough council last week agreed to make the designation order under Local Authority Regulations about the consumption of alcohol in public places.

The order applies at all times to Queens Park, the King George V Playing Fields and Tipkinder Park to the west of town.

It will be enforced by the police, covering all events and embracing all age groups.

The permanent order follows last year's temporary ban for events such as the Carnival in the park, which officers say passed off smoothly as a result.

Councillor Howard Curran said: "I would have preferred that a restriction of this sort was not necessary.

"However, we have a duty to protect our citizens from the drunken behaviour of a small minority and, with the support of the police, we will take whatever steps are needed to stage family-friendly events."
