Lib Dem leader voted against his own amendment to stop the move

LOCAL Tory leader Brian Silvester has hit out at his Liberal Democrat counterpart Gwyn Griffiths after he voted against his own plan to save Crewe's War Memorial.

Cllr Griffiths moved an amendment at last week's Full council meeting to keep the memorial in the Market Square but then went against it when he voted.

Cllr Silvester said: "I have never seen anything like it in 20-odd years of local government and to make matters worse it is in his ward and he has let so many people down.

"This is a typical example of double-dealing on his part and what this astonishing incident shows is that the only thing you can be sure about with the Liberal Democrats is they will vote with Labour and against the interests of the people of Crewe and Nantwich."

Cllr Griffiths said: "We had the item put on the agenda in order to have a full and open debate for all councillors to express their views, but it became clear the Conservatives had put the party whip on their members.

"This meant they were forced to vote in favour of keeping the War Memorial on Market Square even if it meant they didn't agree with it.

"I wasn't prepared to see an amendment that I had put forward in good faith, abused for party political purposes."
