Father and daughter team up to raise cash

TWO Winsford charity workers are trying to raise enough money to build an orphanage for children who lost their parents in the tsunami disaster.

Alan Badder 60, of Llandovery Close and his daughter Suzanne, 31, are set to help a charity raise the £15,000 needed to build the children's home in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo.

Alan, who has previously worked for charities in Croatia and Bosnia during times of war, is hopeful they can make a difference.

He said: "A lot of money has been raised for the relief effort but what we are concentrating on is the long term effects of the disaster.

"Many children have lost their parents and now they are too frightened of the sea to stay where they are.

"By building the home in Colombo those children will be given support and hopefully they will one day be able to return to where they grew up."

The pair will set up a display at the Asda store in Winsford to collect donations from shoppers.

Alan said: "A plot of land has been donated to AFLAC International, the charity behind the scheme, so now it is just a question of raising the £15,000 needed to build it.

"I'm not sure if we will reach that figure ourselves but we can certainly get a long way towards it.

"We realise that people have already been generous in their donations and this has helped relieve the initial problems but we hope they can help us with this long term problem as well which will need input for many years.

"I would like to stress that there is no administration charge so every penny of the money donated will go towards the building of the home."

The display will be in Asda from Saturday and anyone who would like to help can contact Alan on 01606 556689.
