Late strike spares a 'Flood' of Town tears

Spalding United 1

Warrington Town 1

IAIN Dyson rescued a point for Warrington Town on Bank Holiday Monday to spare his goalkeeper's blushes and cap off arguably his best performance since joining the club at the start of the season.

The leggy midfielder drilled the ball in from close range with what was the second to last kick of the UniBond League first division game after Dean Canning and Leon Noel had made a big impact from the substitutes' bench. The duo sparked a succession of chances while Craig Ward made an excellent debut after stepping up from the reserves.

Ward was a rock at the heart of Town's defence but he was helpless to stop Spalding from taking a 70th minute lead when goalkeeper Colin Flood allowed a long range shot to squirm underneath his body.

Town manager Glenn Walker said: "We were short of numbers on Monday and Spalding had most of the possession.

"But we had a lot more chances than them and would have won comfortably had it not been for a great performance from their goalkeeper."

Walker added: "We have now lost only one game in 10 matches but we have got a big month coming up.

"We've got two cup quarter-finals to play in January and we play the top two teams in the league at home.

"But first we travel to Brigg Town in the league on Saturday and play Prescot away in the second round of the Liverpool Senior Cup on Tuesday (kick-offs 3pm and 7.45pm respectively).

"Both are big games for us. Brigg are a good side at home and there will be a lot of local pride at stake on Tuesday.

"We have a few former Prescot players in our side and we will be desperate to win that one."

Town: Colin Flood, Lee Smith, Danny Salt, Iain Dyson, Paul Clarke, Craig Ward, Dave Tickle, Steve Latham, Mike Heverin, Graeme Mitchell, Chris Bermingham. Subs used: Dean Canning, Leon Noel.
