Firefighters warning to child arsonists

CHILD arsonists as young as 10 are putting lives at risk, firefighters have warned.

They have set fire to refuse and furniture six times within three days, underneath the arches in Egerton Street.

"This is a danger to the young children and property in the vicinity," warned sub officer Ken Sharratt.

"Some of the things they are burning could contain explosive aerosols which could cause serious injury and possible death."

Crews spotted youngsters aged between 10 and 14 red-handed setting fire to settees after a spate of similar incidents.

Firefighters are liaising with the police to identify the culprits.

"These children would be coming home covered in black soot and smelling of fire," said sub officer Sharratt.

"I would ask parents to be vigilant and if they suspect anything, make sure their children haven't got any lighters or matches."
