Driver was under the influence when he went to the takeaway

A MOTORIST has been banned from driving after he was caught behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.

Jobless Alan Edge, aged 31, of Underwood Lane, Crewe, admitted the offence at South Cheshire Magistrates Court.

Prosecuting Simon Pover told how Edge's Vauxhall Cavalier was stopped on Bright Street at around 11pm on December 3.

A breath test revealed he had 57 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Defending, Stuart Flood told how Edge had been drinking earlier that afternoon in the Bell Vue public house but had made the mistake of going out later for another drink.

Mr Flood said: "He was only driving some 500 yards to a local Chinese takeaway. He has entered a prompt and guilty plea."

Banning Edge from driving for a year, district judge Brigitte Knight said: "For no better reason than that you were travelling to get a takeaway you have become another statistic of somebody who has not only risked his own life, but also those of others."

Edge was also fined £200 and ordered to pay £70 costs.
