Capital Gold Soul Classics, various

Nicola Priest

THIS was a real step back in time for me to those days when, along with various mates, I spent most of my spare time in my bedroom rehearsing dance routines to songs such as The Supremes Stop! In The Name of Love and The Isley Brothers' This Old Heart of Mine, played on an old record player (anyone remember those?)

Then of course we got to practise them at Lymm Rugby Club's Saturday night discos. God, how I've lived!

So it was thoroughly enjoyable to review this classic and I've spent a happy week singing at the top of my voice - in my car obviously - as sadly my singing's not appreciated at either work or home.

There are 48 brilliant tracks on this two CD collection from the Motown era including soul queen Aretha Franklin's I Say a Little Prayer, Edwin Starr's War, Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and Freda Payne's Band of Gold. Plus tracks from the fabulous Jackson 5, Jackie Wilson, Otis Reading and Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes.

A great buy for someone's Christmas stocking.
