A GRAPPENHALL woman who has devoted 18 years to working for the Alzheimer's Society has picked up a national award for her service.
Kath Rafferty, of Knightsbridge Avenue, formed the Warrington support group of the society 18 years ago after her husband Tom died from the illness.
And Mrs Rafferty, aged 81, was chosen by the national charity to collect one of six service awards to mark the national society's 25th anniversary - a framed certificate and a silver-mounted wall plaque.
Pam Bickerstaff, who is also in the group, said Mrs Rafferty was well deserving of the prizes.
She added: "When her husband had Alzheimer's, she realised people did not get support for looking after patients. So she decided she would try to do something about it. Everyone loves her because she knows what people are going through and she is always there at the end of the phone."
The group meets every third Tuesday at 7.30pm at Woodlea Day Centre on Callands Road.
