Break from work on Golden Square

WORKS to upgrade Golden Square shopping centre will take a break until Tuesday, January 4.

The works are the first part of the multi million pound facelift of the shopping centre and may mean pedestrians and cars have to follow diversions.

l Legh Street

Engineers are widening the road. While the works are going on, the car park and footbridge are open, but the small island at the junction of Legh Street and Midland Way and the small island at the corner of Kendrick Street have been removed to allow cars to use a temporary right filter lane to access the Law Courts and Travelodge.

l Midland Way

Hoardings have been erected on Midland Way and at the corner of Winwick Street. The special hydraulic piling rig is scheduled to be in place until the end of December.

While the work is going on, some town centre access routes have been temporarily redirected. A new temporary, but shorter, route has been opened between Midland Way and the railway line for shoppers to get to the town centre, via Horsemarket Street.

The previous access on Bewsey Street (under Midland Way) and the footbridge leading from Bewsey Street to Golden Square has now closed.

l Golborne Street

Work on the new bus station will begin at the end of February. To allow buses to access the depot the three small islands at the depot's entrance will be removed.
